This is squarely about the equipment that runs your pool, pumps, heaters, filters, valves, and salt chlorine generators. It doesn't extend into pool remodeling, resurfacing, or deck and structural work, which are a different kind of project entirely.

Salt cells typically last around five years, or roughly 10,000 hours of operation. A warning message doesn't always mean the cell itself is bad, low stabilizer, an imbalanced pH, or cold water can produce the same symptoms, which is why we test rather than assume.

Grinding or screeching usually points to worn motor bearings. Humming without starting can mean a failed capacitor or a jammed impeller. Weak flow from the returns, a filter pressure gauge that's drifted from its normal baseline, or steady leaking around the housing are all reasons to have it inspected before it fails outright.
Most salt cells last around five years, or roughly 10,000 hours of operation, with regular cleaning extending that. Signs it may need replacing include a persistent "check salt" message despite normal salt levels, a cell warning light, high voltage readings, or low chlorine output. A few of those symptoms overlap with low stabilizer or pH issues, so testing first avoids replacing a cell that isn't actually the problem.
Common causes include a dirty filter restricting flow to the heater, a pump not delivering enough pressure, a thermostat set below the current water temperature, or (for heat pumps) outside air below roughly 50°F, which reduces their efficiency. Gas heaters can also lose heat to ignition, venting, or a tripped high-limit switch. Diagnosis narrows it down before anything's replaced.
